Introduction

I’m glad you’re here. Thank you for allowing me to walk with you. During my life, I’ve been in a place where I didn’t understand the need for faith or even understand what I was saying during prayers despite growing up Catholic. You’re taking the first step in moving toward a personal transformation, unlike any other self-help manual or inspirational “how-to.” Reclaim is about you and your relationship with God. This is your chance to grow in faith with all those who have leaned on their faith to handle whatever life has put in front of them.

“So, why is this ‘prayer guide’ different from the others?” Thanks for asking. First, age does not matter. Secondly, even if this is the first time you are attempting to form a personal relationship with God or have been praying for years, I want to take you beyond words to guide you into the full meaning of what you proclaim in the prayer. I’ve chosen a pattern of prayers that encourage a basic foundation that you can go back to repeatedly. There are many prayer books and self-help manuals, but few help you understand the “why” behind each step. Prayer cannot just be words said for the sake of saying them – our heart must be in them.

Let’s think of it this way – this forty-day prayer routine is meant to be an “exercise” program for your soul. I’ve formed a plan to take our spiritual muscles and concentrate on the core first. Once we complete the first phase, we focus on other areas to achieve a firm foundation. This plan makes you well-rounded in your prayer, not just asking for things or praying the same way you always have – we need to mix it up a little and concentrate on the purpose to explore our “why.”

So, just like a workout routine, the first day of each “new set” is easy, then it builds so we don’t stay where we are – we make progress by adding additional prayers each day. Each week is meant to call us into a deeper relationship and nurture various aspects of our lives. Specific prayers are intended to help us grow by providing faith-centered fulfillment to be reminded of what is truly important in life. Reclaim focuses on each Person of the Trinity, along with holy men and women who have given us a model of faith to live by.

As the mind, heart, and soul “workout” progresses, you might feel inspired to add your own prayers to any day; do it! If not, keep following the plan as written and look for inner growth. The most important thing is to make the time each day to spend a few minutes re-centering yourself completely, committed to the reflection and conversation of prayer without any outside distractions. This might not be easy, but see it through.

This new routine/habit shouldn’t end after forty days. Allow this opportunity for spiritual health to remain with you for the rest of your life. May you be inspired to continue to find your favorite prayers that resonate most deeply with your heart in your current situation.
